Vitani is the middle cub and only daughter of Zira, and she does not remember life before exile. She grew up harboring a strong hatred for Simba and the Pridelanders, heavily indoctrinated by her mother who also emphasized the importance of family loyalty. She and Nuka had been charged with looking out for Kovu because he was Scar's intended heir, and while her older brother resented it, Vitani took her protective role seriously. She trained with Kovu from childhood into adolescence, and supported him in his bid to kill Simba and rule in his stead. She and Nuka were ordered by their mother, Zira, to start a brushfire in order to set the scene for Kovu's "rescue" of Simba's daughter, Kiara - and that is the last thing she remembers before the Void destroyed her world.

In the years following her "arrival" in New York City, Vitani didn't remember who she really was. Kesi's father died when she was two, saddling her mother with three kids. At seventeen with her mother's consent she enlisted in the military for the money (to support herself and to help support her family). She spent four years serving active duty in the army and then returned to New York to finish out the rest of her contract as a reservist. She was twenty-one when she got her first gig as a bouncer through word-of-mouth. A friend of a friend had a bar and needed some extra help; did she want to give it a shot? As it turned out, Kesi was good at de-escalating fights, and when that didn't work, she could take a hit and keep on ticking. She was lean, athletic, but unassuming, and what she didn't have in muscle mass or height she made up for with agility, sobriety, and a scrappy fighting style. Her salary as a bouncer isn't enough to live on comfortably, so Kesi takes on odd jobs where she can. She's getting by.

And she has more important things to worry about now that she knows who she is. The images - the memories - came slowly at first, but coupled with her new abilities (tracking in the form of enhanced senses which enables her to not only reconstruct where someone has been based on what she smells but also to distinguish the Ioyipia-born Spirits from human beings), Kesi remembered. Kesi/Vitani is unsure about what it means to be a human being and to live in a place like this; she is torn between her two lives. Zira is not around to give her orders (she has mixed feelings about that) but Kesi/Vitani knows what she needs to do (it's what she's been doing her whole life): find Kovu and look after him.

Kesi/Vitani's defining trait is her unwavering loyalty to her family: her mother's mission to destroy Simba and her own role in insuring that Kovu becomes the king he was meant to be. She is obedient to her mother and protective of her younger brother, but her way of showing affection is abrasive, prickly, and tinged with sarcasm. She is self-sufficient, blunt, and comfortable around violence - even instigating it on occasion. Kesi/Vitani is also practical and rarely driven to action by emotional impulses (unlike her older brother or her mother); she is someone who follows orders as long as they make sense to her. She is a responsible, goal-oriented person; however, this practicality is tempered by her dedication to her loved ones.

Kesi/Vitani is not used to putting herself first and she will make unhealthy compromises in order to keep her idea of a family together. Having grown up in an unstable, inhospitable environment, she never expects things to be easy. And because she does not want to be alone, she tends to justify the irrational or abusive behavior of people she is attached to. In addition, she often buries her own internal conflicts to rally in service to someone else. Kesi/Vitani is a better soldier than she is a leader. She is not innovative in terms of her problem-solving skills and she lacks the charisma to command people, but she is a reliable and fearless individual. Disciplined, focused, and diligent, once she gives her word she will go above and beyond expectations to keep it.
