I'm not just one of your many toys
It had been a long, trying past few weeks but just for her. Apollo's new assistant, Noemi Vidal, had it rough and Cosette's heart went out to the young woman. Cosette herself had learned how to deal with the younger Prince, but of course she didn't have to work with him as exclusively as Noemi did. Over the course of the work days, she'd been giving Noemi little words of advice her and there, most especially when Apollo would be him particular willful and indulgent self. More than anything Cosette felt pity for Apollo. She saw in him a man who didn't want what his father was forcing upon him, someone who'd been given so little guidance in his life and now was expected to be perfect. Granted, Cosette had insight where most did not. She was one of Apollo's head secretaries, though it meant little other than ferrying information to his latest Assistant, of whom was Noemi. Not only that though, Cosette had a particularly close relationship with Shaw, Apollo's best friend. Over the past few years that she had been at Epsilon International Shaw had let little things about his and Apollo's personal lives slip. It was difficult not to, he and Cosette had a rather intimate relationship so far he'd been unable, or perhaps unwilling, to commit to anything truly long term. An irritation to address another day, today Cosette was hoping to catch Noemi for lunch.

The girls in the office were awfully catty, a great deal of them older women. Cosette didn't doubt this was Adonis Prince's doing, perhaps to cut down on his son's extra curriculars, but in essence it also made the workplace a delicate sort of place. Cosette had learned to navigate it fairly well, though it helped that Shaw had always paid her special attention. Did she hear the gossip about her? Well of course, but her work was done quickly and efficiently, despite any mutterings about her personal life and over the past few years she'd been begrudgingly accepted. So far, Noemi was still a newcomer and most of the others didn't bother to be overly friendly. Most figured she'd be out on her ass within a few months anyway, Apollo had a habit of chasing them out or getting them canned within three to six months. Cosette though, she saw something in Noemi. A fire, a passion. Perhaps not quite for this job or position, but a certain zest for life that was undeniable. She'd had little chats with the woman throughout their time together, but so far they hadn't had any real time together. Lunch would be perfect, at least in Cosette's opinion. Apollo was out of the office today (big surprise there) and if lunch ran a little late, Cosette would excuse them.

Cosette had been planning this little outing for a few days now, since Noemi had blown out of Apollo's office with the proverbial steam coming out of her ears. Cosette had waited to see if she would return to work and when she had, her respect for the woman grew. It took a special sort not to tell Apollo to go get bent, and Cosette was willing to help Noemi navigate these waters if she wanted her help.

Lunch was upon them and Cosette slid from behind her desk, hooking her designer purse onto her arm. For all intents and purposes, she looked every bit as polished and professional as the men and women around her. She took special care to blend in with the rich folk, though few knew that she scoured the internet for her designer clothes, looked for lightly used items in thrift stores and the like. Cosette was a bargain hunter and was excessively good at it. She lived extremely modestly, the cost of school left her with just enough to keep herself alive and she'd still had to file for financial aid. It wasn't like her salary was bad, it was excellent and came with excellent benefits that she was grateful to have, but an education was expensive, especially the higher one went. One day she'd be able to live in the lap of luxury, but alas even then would she be able to enjoy it? She saw how much people like Adonis Prince worked; so much that they rarely enjoyed what all their money brought in. Cosette pushed the thought away from her as she made her way to Noemi's desk.

"Hey there." she said kindly, her French accent as apparent as always. "I wanted to know if you might join me for lunch today?" Cosette smiled, a hopeful look on her face. Out of the all of the women on this floor, she and Noemi were the closest in age and the observation hadn't escaped her, nor most others.

Sanity, Noemi was learning, was a fragile thing. Much more fragile than she had ever realized when it came to working with certain types of people. Every day for the last few weeks she had come into this job chanting a mantra about how she was a survivor and she would fight her way through this. Apollo Prince might be her nemesis but she was not afraid of him and she would not be cowed by him. He may have run off or gotten his previous assistants fired and she was determined to be the one in which he will have met his match. Noemi had survived terminal cancer for God’s sake! She could survive a spoiled brat of a human being. She had stuck to her resolve as well. Anything that Apollo asked her to do she did with a smile albeit a fake one. Noemi was sure that her boss was not ignorant to the fact she was coming at this from a different angle but it gave him absolutely nothing to complain about. He had nothing he could take back to his father that would cost her the job. Of course, the second his back was turned she was making faces at him, earning her a few giggles from one of the other secretaries she’d come to know as Cosette.

Truly, Cosette had been a blessing. She didn’t simply sit back and sneer at Noemi as she tried to navigate these particularly rough waters. The redheaded woman had actually been helping her by giving her small bits of advice from her own observations over the time she had worked at Epsilon. Noemi had been more grateful than Cosette could ever realize. If not for her, Noemi might have already burnt Apollo’s office to the ground and laughed as she did it. He was the most infuriating human being she had ever met in her life and something particular bothered her though she had yet to identify what that thing was. Sure, he was annoying but so were many people. What was it about Apollo that she found utterly detestable? It couldn’t just be because he was rich and spoiled. Noemi had never wanted those things in life so she wasn’t envious of him. Clearly Apollo hadn’t been raised with any type of real morals or a loving family like she had so in a sense she felt she was far more wealthy in things than he was. She might have thought more about if had Cosette not approached her desk and asked if she wanted to go to lunch.

Looking up at the other woman, she offered a relieved smile. ”Yes, please. That actually sounds like a great idea.” Noemi stood from her desk and smoothed the skirt she was wearing. Apollo had left the office over an hour ago for an indeterminate amount of time. A whole bubble of nasty words had been on the tip of her tongue to sling at him but she had simply smiled and told him his messages would be on his desk. The second he was out the door she had stuck her tongue out at the closed elevator doors. This is what he did to her; reduced her to childish behavior because she had no other outlet. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. She had met Levant and he had been more than happy to help her work out the stress. What was meant to be a one night stand had turned into randomly texting each other when the mood struck. More like Noemi texting Levant because she wanted to rage fuck because Apollo had done something particularly annoying that day.

Noemi gathered her purse and work badge and slid the chair she’d been sitting in under her desk. ”Okay, let’s go.” she smiled and gestured for Cosette to lead the way. This would be the first time the two of them would go out to lunch together, which worked out as it was one of the only times Noemi hadn’t brought her food. Normally she was quite diligent about bringing lunch to work for the simple fact it was cheaper. She could make a protein last a whole week if she had to. It helped being resourceful when you were so busy. ”What did you have in mind?” she asked her co-worker as they left the building and entered into the busy streets of Manhattan.

"Nothing too fancy," Cosette said as Noemi slid from behind her desk. She hooked her arm with Noemi's, ignoring the fact that the other woman might not be as prone to easy touches as she was. Cosette had very few friends, few she cared about and those she did she liked to express that feeling to. She hadn't known Noemi long, but she felt a sort of kindred spirit within the other. They were two peas in a pod, both intelligent and driven, both holding a great deal more ambition than those around them. Cosette had known early on that if Noemi could face Apollo, that if she could hold her own with the well known lady-killer himself, that she was someone Cosette wanted to know. Noemi had proven herself over the past few weeks and really, Cosette was excited that she'd agreed to lunch. She was going to have a fine time picking the other girl's brain, seeing what made her tick so to speak. Noemi hadn't shared a great deal about herself and honestly, Cosette didn't expect her to just start an avalanche of information. Still, she hoped to foster a bit more trust with this outing. Noemi was a special sort, that much Cosette had garnered, and perhaps a woman such as her would be good for Apollo.

"There's a little sandwich shop just down the way. Busy busy, but they are quick and efficient. They'll have us sitting in the sunlight, drinking tea in no time." she said cheerfully as they made their way out of the office. Cosette led them to the shop, idle chit chat on her tongue. They discussed simple trivialities for the moment, what they were working on and how the day was going, simple things that anyone could overhear and not turn heads. The girls entered the shop and, as Cosette had said, it was busy. They were whisked through the line quickly though, placing their orders before getting little placards to set at their table so their food could be delivered to them. Cosette tugged Noemi along easily, arranging them on the back outside patio beneath a shady umbrella, a stone wall behind them with blooming ivy crawling up the stone and a lovely water feature off the the side. All in all, it was a very cute place tucked away in the middle of Manhattan. Cosette ate here often enough, at least when she had extra cash squirreled away or Shaw treated her. That happened more often than not, despite her protests. He had a penchant for spoiling her even when she got testy with him.

Cosette settled into her seat, their table private enough that people wouldn't actively overhear them unless they were really trying, but still out among the patrons. That was what she liked about this place, truthfully. The illusion of privacy. They did it very well. Cosette hooked her purse on the back of her chair, crossing her legs elegantly as she turned back towards the young woman across from her. She smiled at Noemi, the two finally in a setting where everything they had to say wouldn't be picked apart and looked over. "So tell me," Cosette leaned in, her chin resting on her knuckles, her eyes twinkling knowingly, "What you really think of Apollo. I know he is a brat, but anything else you've determined about our fair Prince?" she said with a little laugh.

Despite how busy the cafe was by the time Noemi and Cosette got there, the line moved rather swiftly, and soon they were tucked away at a little table with their good. Noemi had ordered a turkey wrap and veggie chips and she plucked one of the chips from the basket and popped it into her mouth just as Cosette asked her about Apollo. A groan left the dark haired woman. Noemi had really hoped that her friend wasn’t going to ask about her boss but apparently she had noticed the hostility between the two of them. Not surprising. Noemi didn’t exactly go out of her way to hide how much she disliked the guy. She was sure the whole office she worked in knew that things were tense between her and her boss.

Noemi finally answered after she had swallowed the chip, ”A brat? That is a complete understatement.” As in the biggest understatement she thought she’d ever heard in her life. ”I’m used to brats. My brother is a brat but Apollo is so far beyond that. He’s selfish, rude, and all around volatile. It’s not a surprise that he hasn’t been able to keep an assistant. Any sane person could only deal with that for so long.” She picked up half the wrap from the basket. Cosette had asked so now she was going to get an earful about everything Noemi had been keeping bottled up the last few weeks. ”He has no regard for people round him,” she continued. ”Obviously he was spoiled as a child and doesn’t believe he has to work for anything in his life. I totally don’t mean to sound like one of those radical liberals on Twitter or anything but Apollo is definitely the epitome of white privilege and it shows. He takes everything for granted, including people. I would hate to see what his life is going to be like in the future when he’s old and alone because he alienated people and only has his money for comfort.” At the conclusion of her rant, she bit into the wrap which happened to taste better than she was anticipating.

Maybe she was being too hard on the guy. Noemi was well aware that Apollo’s behavior was because of bad parenting. That seemed to be the case with most socialite children. Lack of parenting which led children to feeling the need to get attention so they did stupid things. However, Apollo was also an adult and should know how the real world actually worked. He didn’t. He still acted like the world revolved around him and it certainly did not. Apollo had never struggled for anything in his life. ”Why do you ask?” Noemi really, really hoped Cosette wasn’t going to jump to Apollo’s defense. It would make for an awkward lunch hour.

There food had been delivered, a chicken pesto salad and a strawberry mint lemonade now in front of Cosette. She smoothed her napkin into her lap as she took up her fork, watching Noemi as the woman chewed on a chip. Cosette knew the other probably would have preferred to stick to less irritating topics, but alas she simply couldn't help herself. Everytime Noemi left Apollo's office and the door closed, the look on her face was priceless. Often enough, Noemi would even stick her tongue out at the closed door when she knew no one but Cosette was looking. It would have been absolutely hysterical if Cosette didn't know that Apollo was actively trying to drive the poor woman mad. She'd have to talk some sense into that boy, not that he ever listened. Perhaps if she impressed upon Shaw the importance of keeping Noemi around? Unhelpful, too she wagered. Apollo listened to no one, not really, not even his best friend. He was going to epicly mess this up and then Cosette was going to be right cross with him. Noemi was a blessing, not to mention Cosette saw how Apollo looked at the woman. Cosette had known the young Prince for a few years now, seen many assistants come and go, but he had his eye on this one. There was something charming about Noemi that Cosette didn't think the other woman even truly realized.

She brought a hand to her mouth the cover the laugh that threatened to pop out of her when Noemi told her that brat was an understatement for Apollo. Well, it wasn't exactly untrue. Before Cosette could even rightly agree, Noemi had launched into a tirade. Ah, yes. This was exactly what she was looking for, honestly. She wanted to know exactly where Noemi stood with Apollo, how she felt about him and really, she was on the right track. At least she wasn't blinded by his money or his good looks. Unfortunately, Noemi was only seeing exactly what Apollo was projecting. The vain, selfish, and rude playboy he tried so hard to convince people he was. So few knew the other side of the coin, the young man who was terrified of rejection, who covered pain with humor, who felt so guilty for all he did, but couldn't bring himself to stop because he didn't know how. Apollo Prince had no idea who he really was or even how to find that man. Cosette had noticed this through not only observation, but of course because she was with Shaw. Shaw didn't talk much about his life, or even much about Apollo, but every now and again he let things slip. Really, it made Cosette's soft heart hurt for the both of them. She hoped one day Shaw would open his eyes and realize she wanted every part of him, the good and the bad. She also hoped that some day, Apollo might find the woman who might not only do the same for him, but might inspire him to be a better, bigger person. Cosette hoped that woman was Noemi, but it was going to take work. So, so much work.

Cosette had been eating her salad as Noemi had regaled her, though she never lost that knowing little smile. Noemi finally bit into her wrap, her face creased with irritation as Cosette gave a little laugh. Her companions turned her face up to look at her again, the question on her lips that Cosette knew she'd ask. "Well for one I am terribly nosy, so I apologize in advance." Best to get that out the way. Cosette wasn't much of a gossip herself, but she always had an ear out. She liked to be in the know and to know just what was going on in Epsilon. Truth be told, she probably had enough information on this person and that to get half of them fired, but she wasn't that sort of person. Quite unlike most of the other catty women who worked with herself and Noemi.

"I'm actually quite glad to hear that Apollo's darling face hasn't made you turn a blind eye to his shortcomings." she said easily. The assistant before Noemi hadn't lasted hardly three weeks before she'd slept with Apollo and been let go for misconduct. "I've been Apollo's secretary for some time now and it's given me a bit of insight into him. Well, that and the fact that I'm seeing one of his only real friends, but I digress," she gave another chuckle. Noemi, too was observant and Cosette didn't exactly hide her relationship with Shaw. She expected questions to arise about that as well, but for now the focus was on Noemi and Apollo. Cosette would entertain questions about herself later she was sure. "The younger Prince is a handful, no question. He's vain and conceited and you're absolutely right in that he takes almost everything in his life for granted. All that aside, he has a good heart even if he hides behind the facade of a lesser man. He's never had anyone to tell him no, to give him direction or show him the way." Cosette leaned back in her chair, looking pensive for a moment. "I'm not at all saying that it's your job to show our fair Prince what it's like to be human, but I would suggest trying to see past some of his flaws. There's a decent man beneath all of that who desperately wants to be seen, but has no idea how to." Cosette gave a delicate shrug afterwards, digging into her salad once more. "Though of course he is rather infuriating, no? You'll get used to it, if you let yourself. Once he knows he can't needle you, he evens out. I promise." Cosette smiled before taking a bite of her salad. If Apollo couldn't drive Noemi insane, he'd find a new tactic she was sure, but baby steps had to be taken.

Noemi hadn’t really been expecting for Cosette to launch into a tirade about how beneath the surface Apollo Prince was a good guy. In fact, she was somewhat taken aback because even if the woman across from her wasn’t trying to defend him, that was exactly what she was doing. She had to really try to to snort her derision about the whole thing. Maybe there was some merit to what Cosette was saying but Noemi had yet to see any of it and she didn’t care to try and look harder. The redhead was right; it wasn’t Noemi’s job to try and teach Apollo how to be a human being. Not to mention, he was well into adulthood and it was likely he couldn’t be changed anyway. He did nothing but frustrate her because he thought it was funny and the only reason Noemi put up with it was because the money was too good. She was a college student that came from a middle class family. They couldn’t afford to carry her and she couldn’t expect them too. Not when they had spent so much time caring for her when she’d been a sickly child. Besides, relying on them would feel like defeat to Noemi. Lots of people had tough jobs and asinine bosses. She was no different from the mass majority. So she would stick it out until she could make her dream come true.

”Even if what you’re saying is true...I don’t think he wants to be guided or changed,” she responded finally. ”If he did then he might start by showing a bit of humility.” Even though Cosette was Apollo’s secretary, she had clearly never been his assistant because if she had there was no way she would be trying to convince Noemi he wasn’t such a shitty human being.

Half the wrap she’d chosen for lunch was gone but she’d mostly lost her appetite at this point. Instead of finishing it, Noemi sat back in her chair with her drink. She wasn’t sure exactly why Cosette was interested in her opinion of Apollo. Nosiness couldn’t be the only thing that had her wondering. Noemi wondered if she did this with all of Apollo’s assistant, perhaps with the hope that one of them might be strong enough to break whatever curse she seemed to think was placed on the guy. Noemi didn’t believe in curses. She believed people made up their own curses as an excuse to get away with certain behaviors. Apollo was definitely the sort that would do such a thing. Poor little rich boy who’s never had to work for anything. It made her want to vomit. ”But let’s just suspend reality for a moment and pretend what you’re saying is true and that all he needs is someone to show him a bit of...compassion,” Noemi nearly choked on the last word, ”why don’t you show it to him?” She wasn’t trying to be nasty about it and she had kept her tone light. It was a curiosity nonetheless. Perhaps being a secretary and therefore not so close to Apollo she could be the right woman for the job instead of Noemi.

A small voice in the back of her mind knew that she probably wasn’t being fair and that Cosette’s insistence that Apollo had a good heart could be true. Noemi just didn’t want to listen to it. It was much easier to think him a rude, terrible person so she didn’t end up feeling sorry for him. Furthermore, it was easier than admitting that while he drove her completely insane she couldn’t deny the fact she found him attractive. Noemi hated herself for it. Apollo Prince was not a man she would ever want to become involved with.

Noemi was clearly not moved by Cosette's words, not that she was perturbed by this. If the other woman had let some sudden realization dawn upon her that Apollo wasn't the terrible human being he portrayed and accepted Cosette's words without argument, she'd have lost faith in her. Noemi was a fighter, someone who wasn't will to concede to another simply because someone else had said it was true. It was why Cosette liked her, it was why she thought that Noemi might actually be the one to bring some kind of focus to Apollo's life. Why she felt so motherly towards the younger Prince was anyone's guess, but she felt a pull to him not unlike the one she felt towards Shaw. It helped of course that she'd witnessed his more human side herself on more than one occasion. She'd seen him with Shaw, taking care of his closest friend during some of the trying times in his life. She'd seen him hand out money to charity, shrugging it off as something rich people did even though she knew the charities he'd donated to were close to his heart. Even though he was insufferable to those who knew him, he was good to those who didn't. Cosette had seen his kindnesses, called him on them more than once but of course he'd always just grinned and shrugged at her. He was a good man, but he played a part because of his father, perhaps even because of his own insecurities. More than anything she pitied him. Perhaps not what he would want, but Apollo had no direction in life and had no idea how to find it. She and Shaw had tried to help bring his life into focus, but he simply wasn't having it. Shaw had been strong enough to pull himself out from beneath his upbringing, but not everyone was made the same way. Apollo held many more insecurities than Shaw, all over them covered by a swagger that was matched by few. She couldn't imagine that Apollo's life wasn't physically, mentally, and emotionally draining.

Cosette thanked God often that she'd never had to be Apollo's assistant. The job had come along after she'd been hired in and while it had been offered to her at the beginning, she'd declined. The money hadn't been as good as she was sure it was now, seeing as Apollo didn't have a long line of previous hires back then. She'd declined because the workload was all together too much for her to juggle along with school. She didn't have the time for it and knowing Apollo as she did now, she was glad she hadn't. He'd gone through assistants like socks, some of them more deserving their eventual termination than others, but until now she'd seen none that she'd thought had any real chance at touching the young Prince. Noemi was a force to be reckoned with, Cosette only hoped she wouldn't determine Apollo to be more trouble than he was worth.

She couldn't help the little bubble of laughter that escaped her as Noemi nearly choked on her words. Her question was direct, but Cosette didn't take any offense. It was a legitimate question. "Now I didn't say he was in need of compassion, per say. Understanding is more like." Her eyes twinkled just a bit as she sipped at her drink. "I do. Shaw does. Those few of us who know him well enough try our best, but we're not the right people for it. You and I, our personalities are very different you see. I think if anyone has a chance at showing Apollo which way is up, it's you." She smiled lightly. Noemi was nothing like those who had come before her, in truth she wasn't anything like anyone Cosette had ever known before, either. Before she'd been hired, Cosette hadn't even been convinced that there was even someone out there who could handle Apollo at his worst. He drove people away on purpose and he was exceptionally good at it. "Not quite what's outlined in your employment paperwork, but if you are to succeed in being Apollo's assistant without losing your mind, you'll need to try and understand him. Figure him out where everyone else hasn't and outfox the fox as they say. You simply have to be better at the game than he is." Cosette gave a little shrug afterwards, knowing that the entirety of situation wasn't quite fair. It wasn't Noemi's fault Apollo had been raised the way he had been and now by some stroke of luck, good or bad yet to be determined, she'd been saddled with him and if she wanted to stick with the job, she was going to have to learn to make things work with him. Cosette didn't envy her in the least, but at least she could help her out if she wanted to press on and oh, she so hoped she did.
